Sue Rostron – My Priory Experience

How did I get into tennis at Priory Tennis Club

I joined the Priory Tennis Club 6 years ago after having lived in the area for many years. I  always fancied joining but never quite had the courage to go in and make enquiries. Then one day I was talking to my sister’s friend, who is a member, and she suggested I go and have a game with her to see if I liked it. The Club offers 3  taster sessions for free so what did I have to lose. I had never played tennis previously  other than a knock about with my parents when I was young, so I was quite nervous when I first went but actually there was nothing to be nervous about.

They have senior social tennis on Monday and Friday mornings and everyone was very welcoming and friendly which I found reassurning. In order to help a novice like myself it was suggested that I try Tennis Express which is a months course run by the Tennis Club Coach and that helped me immensely. The Coach also run 2 Rusty Racquets evenings once a week (for a small fee) one for beginners and one for more advanced players who want to keep improving.

I quickly decided that I would join the club and everyone plays in all weather throughout the year. I soon got to know everyone as at Seniors you just play 4 games each player serving and then you move on to play with different members.

In January this year a member organised a holiday to Lanzarote for both members and their partners and about 25 of us enjoyed a week of tennis or walking. He organised a small tournament and nobody was more surprised than me when my tennis partner and I won, and we were presented with a lovely little trophy which now has pride of place on my unit.

I absolutely love my tennis now and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, not only fresh air and exercise (summer and winter, weather permitting ) but also many friends from not only the tennis but the many social events that we have.
