Geoff Kenworthy Tournament

Geoff Kenworthy Men’s Open Singles Tournament:

Sunday 8th September 2024

Priory Tennis Club held the 6th edition of the Geoff Kenworthy Men’s Open Singles Tournament. Leading up to the tournament, the weather forecast was not looking very favourable at all.  However, just as play was about to start the rain stopped and for most of the day the conditions were perfect, mild, cloudy and no wind.

We ended up with 18 players as we had two last minute cancellations due to injury.  This meant we had two groups of 5 and two groups of 4.

The top 2 of each group went on to the Quarter Finals of the main draw and those that ended up in 3rd and 4th places went on to the Plate Quarter Finals.

We had two fabulously contested finals starting with the Men’s Plate Final which was played between Priory’s Max Woolstencroft and Glossop’s Matt Blaney. A great set of tennis which was won by Matt Blaney.

The Final of the Main Draw was played out by Priory’s Josh Byrom and Bramhall Lane’s Matt French who came through a very tight semi-final against Nick Holmes 14/12 in the tie-break. The high quality of tennis continued into the final where Josh beat Matt 6/3 to defend his title from last year.

It was a very enjoyable day of tennis with a high standard of matches being played out to entertain friends, family and members of the club who had turned up to watch and support the event.

This year we had players enter the tournament from Brabyns, Bramhall Lane, Glossop, New Mills and Rochdale along with players from our own Priory club.

It was nice to receive plenty of comments from these guest players saying how much they had enjoyed their day of tennis and that they would be keen to enter this event again next year.

Plenty of refreshments were put on for the players and those that came to watch including Bacon and Sausage Muffins for Breakfast and either Chilli or Veg Chilli Jacket Potatoes for lunch.

Cynthia Kenworthy was invited to present the trophies to winners once again and we thank her for continuing to support this enjoyable memorial tournament.
