Junior Coaching

Tennis Lessons for Kids at
Priory Tennis Club

Our Junior Tennis programme caters for Members and Non-Members, from the age of 4 (Reception year at school) through to 18 years of age. We run sessions after school on some weekdays, as well as Saturday mornings.  We also run Junior Club Social sessions on Sunday afternoons between 2:30pm and 4:00pm.  sessions are open to 8-11 year olds and 12-17 year olds and are a great way for juniors to improve their tennis and have fun.

Group sessions run during Term times, with tennis camps running during the school holidays (Easter, Whit and Summer).

Our groups are split in terms of age and standard, and an indication of our programme is below (although during the busy summer period extra sessions are generally added). Please note that the ages detailed below are an indication of where they might be, but this may change depending on their prior experience.

Holiday Tennis Camps

During the School Holidays, we also run several Tennis Camps which run throughout the day. Ideal for children aged between 6 and 16 years old, it’s a great way to brush up on your skills, or simply learn to play the game whilst having fun and meeting new friends. Lots of coordination drills, fun warm ups, and children are split into groups according to age and standard.

Equipment is provided if required, and days run between 10am and 3pm. Camps are very popular, and book up quickly. Reception-Year 3 Open Weekends

As part of our community tennis programme, Head Coach Andy Perry works at a number of local Primary schools, and runs some taster sessions each year for the children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes. As part of this initiative, we then host a Tennis Festival (Open day) at the tennis club to give the children a great experience playing on the tennis courts at the club. The first part of the day will be a coaching session for the children with Andy and his team, delivering some of the fun tennis skills they learnt in school, after which parents can come and play with their child, learn about the coaching programmes that are available to sign up for, and get some great offers on memberships. All children who attend Tameside schools are welcome (even if Andy hasn’t managed to get to them – there are a lot of schools in the area!)

FAQs About Junior Coaching

Q – Do you provide rackets to use on the groups?
A – Yes we have spare rackets that the children can use during each session, although many of our Junior do go on to buy their own racket, allowing them to practice in between lessons.

Q – What do I need to wear for a lesson?
A – As long as the player wears sportswear, is comfortable and wears non marking trainers they are good to go!

Q – Do you have to be a member to join the Junior Coaching groups?
A – No, you can do the groups as a Member or Non – Member. Membership however provides discounts on all the groups (£1 per session saved) and camps (£2 per day saved), and provides access to the courts (via our booking app and subject to terms and conditions). To check out the fantastic membership deals currently available go to https://priorytennis.co.uk/join/

Q – Are the any other benefits to joining as a Junior?
A – For those Juniors in Secondary school, or those Primary children who can rally well and play mini matches, we run a FREE Sunday Junior Social session (2.30 – 4pm every Sunday) where the coach puts the children into lots of matches, providing them with lots of competition and fun.

Q – Can I do a taster session if I’m not sure about joining for a course initially?
A – Yes, you can sign up for a Taster session by contacting Head Coach Jonathan Seville directly at jonathansevillecoaching@gmail.com or calling 07581359809.

Q – What age does the Junior programme start from?
A – Our youngest children are in Reception year at school, and we cater all the way up to those in Year 13 (upper 6th).

Q – Do the sessions run all year round and are the sessions weather dependent?
A – Our Groups run all year round, during School Term times. We still run sessions as long as the rain isn’t heavy, or the courts are unplayable, but if we need to cancel a session we text all parents beforehand, and credits are given for future courses to recompense.

Q – How can I help my child get better at tennis?
A – For Primary age children, if they join (from as cheap as £13 per year) a parent can also join (£25 per year) and together they can book out and use the club’s Mini court to practice on during the week. Outside of that, doing basic throw / catch / racket skills / small rally skills in space are fantastic ways to build skills. Speak to one of our coaches for guidance. The more they do at a young age, the better they will be!
