Priory Celebrates 100th Year of Tennis

On Saturday 31st July, the members of Priory Tennis Club celebrated the 100th anniversary of the club with a number of events taking place throughout the day.

It all started with a bit of friendly competition in the first mixed doubles tournament in a number of years. Ready for a competitive afternoon’s tennis, 18 couples participated in the tournament, made up of a mixture of team and social members.

Despite a cool breeze and lower temperatures this did not affect the heat generated on court!

After the 1st knock-out round the couples competed in either the main club or plate competition and everyone enjoyed some closely contested matches.

Before the finals were contested, the club hosted Stalybridge MP Jonathan Reynolds and Civic Mayor of Tameside Janet Cooper. Nick Holmes, Chairman of Priory Tennis Club, delivered a beautiful speech, thanking members past and present for their efforts in making the club what it is today. MP Jonathan Reynolds also delivered some kind words, highlighting the incredible development of the club in recent years and how much it means to sport in Tameside, before handing over to Civic Mayor of Tameside Janet Cooper for the cutting of a celebratory cake, baked by a member of the club.

In the main club competition there was a very close final but eventually Ed Seville and Lesley Barnes beat Chris Czermak and Christine Lolley.

In the plate competition, after a very close final with some intense rallies, the final was won by Judith Mckenzie and John Ackroyd who defeated the runners up Tim Vaughan and Wendy Hare.

Celebrations proceeded into the evening, with members returning to the club for some food and drink.

We’d like to take the opportunity to thank every member of the club for your continued support and participation. Let’s enjoy the next 100 years!
